“…these big Wharfedales represent excellent value. When it comes to build, engineering content and performance, they have little to fear from any rival. “
The Elysian Range
Wharfedale’s Elysian speaker range is some of the brand’s finest work. It was created as a high-end loudspeaker series with the primary goal of bringing thrill and excitement to natural, realistic sound. The series comprises the Elysian 1 bookshelf speaker, Elysian 2 small floorstanding speaker, Elysian 4 full-size floorstanding speaker, and Elysian C centre speaker. Each of these feature luxury materials, performance and design to make their price point truly justified. As with most Wharfedale speakers, the brand leave you wondering how so much was achieved at such a price.
Air Motion Transformer
One of the consistent features across the Elysian range is the Air Motion Transformer (AMT) high-frequency driver. This driver type offers accurate sound reproduction over a wide bandwidth with very little distortion. The AMT works by squeezing air through a contracting and expanding pleated diaphragm; it is a velocity transducer (rather than pressure) meaning greater dynamic range and impactful transients. With such detail and low distortion, the Elysian 4 produces thrill and excitement for the listener.
Midrange Driver
Challenged with creating a midrange driver which equals the accuracy of the Elysian AMT, Wharfedale have used a woven fibre glass matrix cone with combined low-end strength and flexibility. To make this lightweight driver sound great a coated, foamed rubber-like material was used as the surround. This provides low-damping and further plasticity for minimal vibration with acoustic control.
Bass Driver and SLPP
The Elysian 4’s bass units are accompanied by Wharfedale’s Slot Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP) to redirect bass which would otherwise be wasted at the rear of the speaker. The lowest frequencies are routed through the base of the speaker where the high internal pressure is equalised to suit the low pressure of the surrounding environment. Ultimately, the result of the Elysian 4 bass driver and SLPP bass reflex port is a full-sounding low end with thunderous impact; it lays the groundwork for mid and high frequencies to build upon.
Advanced Crossover
To ensure each frequency layer melts into the other, forming a well-rounded and balanced output, the Elysian 4 crossover has been computer modelled for accuracy. The advanced modelling was subjected to Wharfedale’s rigorous testing; undergoing hundreds of hours of listening and fine tuning. All components used are of the highest spec so that no detail is lost and all the subtleties you love are captured in full.
