Running-In Period

Please note: These headphones require an initial ‘running in’ period before reaching their full operating potential. Natural run-in time can be several hours; for fastest results, Focal recommends playing bass-heavy music at a reasonably high volume for approximately 24 hours.

What’s New?

The Focal Utopia (2022) Over-ear Headphones have been Focal’s flagship product since coming to market in 2016. After undergoing some improvements to the already-fantastic sound quality and build they were re-launched in 2022. This updated version, while still open-back and over-ear, now has a honeycomb grille; the hexagonal-shaped holes are more open, resulting in a stronger sense of space and energy in your sound. This design update also aligns the Utopias with other contemporaneous products, such as the Clear MG Open Back Headphones, for better consistency and recognisability. Other design changes include reshaping the driver grille on the inside of the earcups and adjusting the material on the earcups’ inner edge. These both contribute to better sound with the former reducing distortion even further and the latter bettering the general acoustics experienced around the ear.

Exclusive Technology

The 2022 Utopias have a full-range driver on each side which capably reach all the way from 5Hz to 50kHz. Being single drivers, there is no need for a crossover network; while this is typically an opportunity for further sound correction, Focal has expertly designed their pure Beryllium ‘M’-shaped dome drivers to blend high, mid, and low frequencies beautifully. When listening, you’ll feel as though the high fidelity of your loudspeakers has been recreated in the more intimate format of a headphone set. Listen and revel in the unrivalled, uncompromising sonic purity of your music while in the comfort of home, where these headphones are best enjoyed. For best performance, listen to higher quality file formats (like that of a CD at the least), make use of dedicated music-playing software, or, ideally, plug into an amplifying device to bring your source material up to the standards of these epic headphones.

The Utopias are decked out with premium materials which have been finished to an impeccable standard. Their textural details contribute both comfort and sonic benefit over and above their striking appearance. A long-lasting and highly wearable headband has been made of premium leather—so comfortable, in fact, that you’ll be immersed in the sound and forget they’re even there. Leather-bound memory foam earpads and a forged carbon yoke cushion your ears with the perfect amount of compression to suit any head shape or size. As well as being perfectly impressive on their own, these headphones come with plenty of accessories to get stuck in with. Two high-fidelity cables of different lengths (one for portability and one for extended comfort around the home) offer flexibility and quality that’s on parr with the Utopia headphones themselves.
